Hello from your long lost buddy, Cathy!

Hello girls! I'm sorry I've been out of touch. I just started reading the blog again - I was really, really down about the injury and having to bail on the race - so, just kinda needed to regroup, I guess. I'm happy to see that you guys are doing so great preparing for the run! Hard to believe it's just around the corner. I know you'll all do great.

Everything's much much better on my end. You guys all remember I tore a muscle in my calf a few months back. Very scary, humbling moment. After being in the brace for one short week, my physical therapist took me out of it and forced me to walk - even tho the pain sucked. Now I know why she did it - in literally seven days time, I forgot how to walk. It's amazing how fast your brain is like, "oh, ok, you don't want to walk anymore - that's cool." So, had to force myself to walk. And, over the next month or so, gradually lost the limp. I learned a lot through this injury - the importance of stretching - the importance of weight lifting. Also, discovered I'm completely asymmetrical - one leg = the hulk, the other leg = not so much. So, the therapist made me start lifting individually (so, my hulk leg doesn't lift the weight, while my piddly one just goes along for the ride). I see a difference already.

So, the past three months have been spent doing a lot of walking - forwards, backwards, sideways - on the treadmill. I don't have any pain anymore - just tightness for the most part. I'm done with therapy. And, we think I'll not need surgery. That's awesome. I do feel really good. And, this weekend, for the first time since the injury, I suited up, stretched and went for a run in central park. It felt great. No pain. Three and a half miles on my pace (don't be impressed. my pace is slow. always.) But, I did it. I can't tell you how much I've missed it.

There's the NYC update! I am sending loads of good thoughts your way as you prepare for the run. Cathy

Welcome Back Cathy! And thank you so much for letting me use your spaghetti dinner ticket for the ATM. I really wish you'd be able to make it though. 3 1/2 miles sounds great! I'm not doing much more than that--are you sure you won't be up to 10 miles in 6 weeks? Don't worry about speed. We've all agreed to go slow and just have fun.

I'm curious--how did one leg get so much stronger than the other? I was like that with my forearms in high school. One arm was Popeye, the other Olive Oyl. I had a job at Baskin Robbins and always scooped with the same arm!

Hi E! I mailed Ang a copy of my driver's license last week -so hopefully you're all set for the pasta dinner.
Ten miles is just too ambitious at this point. But, maybe next year!!
As for my mismatched legs - I think it stems from years and years of soccer. I always kicked with the same leg! Your story is better! Take care - C

Hi Cathy,
It is good to hear from you again. I am glad to hear that you are feeling better and able to run again so soon. I do hope we can meet in person one day.
