Day 3 & 4, Week 4

Yesterday I went to the gym and did an easy air-conditioned run. I also did bi's and tri's with my balance disk. I have not lifted consistently for the last few weeks, so I was a bit apprehensive about my chin-ups. Yeah! My first set I did 10, nice, slow and controlled. My second set, I managed 9 and my third set, I was able to do 3 full negatives. All in all, a good job for my age!

Total Miles: 5
Speed: 8:30

Today, I ran with my new friend during soccer practice. I am so inspired by her. At the age of 37, she has run 38 marathons in 8 years. She is married to a merchant marine (never home) and has 2 kids.

Total Miles: 5
Speed: Average 8:42
Temperature: 82

On a personal note, I took Ian to the high school parking lot (think big space) and taught him to drive a stick in my BMW. I think that is a note worthy occasion. We both survived, the car is fine and no one has whiplash. He only stalled out a few times and it was not from first to second, it was at the stop when he forgot to put the clutch in. He is not ready to drive it on the road, yet, but I let him get to third gear. At 16 1/2, he is behind his peers with this whole driving thing. Thank goodness he is not in a hurry. And so, we will continue to scope out those big empty spaces.

My mother made me wait until I was 17 to drive. Most (okay all) of my friends drove at 16 after taking driver's education but I had to wait to take the course the following year. I remember complaining to no end about being the only one not driving but looking back, we have SOOO many years of driving. He's light years ahead of the game with learning a stick...my first stick experience was in 2004 in a parking lot in Sorghof with Gina. I stalled many times!!!

Hi Nicole. It was so easy being in GE where the kids aren't allowed to drive until they are 18. Virginia has great restrictions on teenagers. Like the 16 year olds are only allowed one other teenager in the car. 17 year olds can have 2. The kids also have to hold their permits for 9 months before they are eligible for a license. That puts Ian driving on his own in May. Just in time to help with the driving to TX. By the time we cover the 2100 miles to Ft Bliss, I should feel confident with his driving.

You crack me up! I can just imagine you and Gina in that parking lot. You couldn't have picked a more patient teacher, I'm sure. I learned to drive a stick in a school bus!

By the way, he will be almost 17 1/2 when he gets his license. I will tell him that you survived just fine.

Wow, he is 16.5 . . . time slips by so fast. And about the driving to Texas . . . think wide open spaces when driving that road to nowhere! Sean and I drove to El Paso one too many times (his mom's family lives there) . . . it feels as if you are going no where but I love El Paso! Really, you will want to go about 100 because there is nothing!

Hi Heidi,
Yes, it is the children that age us. Ian is a junior this year, so he will do his senior year out in TX. He is still considering TX schools for college. I think I remember a conversation we had about Texas A&M.

Other than a brief visit to a dear friend in Ft Hood, I have never been to TX. We are really looking forward to it. However, we have been warned about that drive.

By the way, Tanner is 9 and stands as tall as my chin.

If Ian is thinking about A&M then he should try to go do one of the overnight visit with the Corps . . . plus there are some great scholarships there too if he is going ROTC. It really is a fun place to study but I am sure FUN isn't the word a parent wants to hear! I don't know who is in the Army office any more since my friend left. Is Beth A.'s husband still working there?
