V--you need to keep up that cold-weather training so you can come join me in Alaska for a half-marathon! And the rest of you need to start! I'm getting ahead of myself since I don't know if that's where we're headed, but I'm already researching the races. The Midnight Sun Marathon (and half-marathon) is in Anchorage, about 360 miles away from Fairbanks which is where we'd be. The train ride takes 12 hrs, so it wouldn't be terribly convenient. At first I thought they started at midnight since it's not dark, but it starts at 9am. Whew.
In Fairbanks, the local running club (which I will join ASAP if we go there--I've never lived in a place with a running club and it sounds fun) hosts the Equinox Marathon in September. It's only a marathon and marathon relay with 3-person teams. It is one of the hardest courses in America. I hear you go straight up a mountain for about 8 miles, and then straight down again. Here's a graphic. Yikes! The relay would definitely be my only option so I need 2 more people! Can I have the first leg?
They hold races/runs year-round in Fairbanks and I found the calendar to have interesting notes such as: "Extra snowshoes available, bring headlamp", "Regardless of temperature", and "Variable distances depending on temperature." Their New Year's Eve run took place in temps in the -30's.
The Back of the Pack 10K sounds like it's for me: "Free! Special event for middle of the pack and slower runners." I think I'll skip Masochism on Moose Mountain, the Two-Way Torture Test, and the Ester Dome Ass Kicker.
So who's up for a little hypothermia??

I'm up for the Midnight Sun Marathon in June '09. That should be right before Ian goes off to college. With Pete deployed, I will take advantage of having a babysitter for as long as possible. I can't wait to see Alaska. Texas next? There are lots of 10-13.1 races there. We'll wait until Ian is home from school and leave him with all the kids. Ha!
I like the idea of the Back of the Pack 10K; that's cute. I've also seen regular races where they give an award to whomever comes in at the exact middle of the pack - kind of a nice reward if you happen to be the "averagest of the average." I'm usually right around that time, though I've never won.
