Resistance Training

No, I did not go to the gym today, I ran in the wind! There is a small craft advisory for the water, so at least I feel validated.

I did my speed work last weekend and was quite surprised at my interval times. In the past, I have always done interval training on a treadmill. I did it this way because I can control the speed and I thought if I were on my own I would probably slow down too early. Well, that may still be true; however, I was able to reach some speeds that I have never run. We went out to that Great Dismal Swamp again. Every quarter mile is marked so I could jog for 1/2 a mile and then run all out for 1/2 a mile. The goal was to get my heart rate as high as I could, but it was nice to see just how fast I can run. My top speed was 5:49 per mile pace. Remember, that it was a short distance (but definitely fun to use against Ian). At the end of my 1/2 mile interval, I was completely done and needed the 1/2 mile recovery. My max heart rate was 180. With that number, I can figure out what 70% is for my easy runs and 85% for speed work. Now when I run, I wear my heart rate monitor to keep me honest.

My mileage is up these days to 30-35 miles a week and I am enjoying the challenge. It helps that Pete is training for distance as well. My new shoes are great and my feet feel so much better. I have backed off on the heavy weights for a while. Between that and the higher mileage, I am dropping a little bit of weight. I want to see if it makes a difference when I race. I am sure it will come right back this winter.

Well Christy, did you burn a hole in your toe?

No, I could not bring myself to burn a hole in my toe. I have however been poking at it. I sterelized a straight pin and stuck it down through the end of my toe. In return I got quite a bit of oozing, like a blister, and a very little bit of pink. I am a little worried because at one point I extracted some white stuff (guessing puss). My nail is painted dark brown so I can't see what it looks like underneath. I hope I didn't do something "bad". I will need some feedback from my health professional friends. Also, is it okay to run on it? And, I've never lost a nail, so does it pull off and hurt? Does it just fall off? Will I need to tape it on until it falls off? I am clueless.

V. will probably be able to help you more when it comes to advice about running on it since I've never actually had this happen to me. The only thing that would stop you from running on it would be pain, I think. If it doesn't hurt, you'll be fine. When it has happened to D., he did everything normal, although we drained it completely.

Yikes! The straight pin in the end of the toe sounds much worse than the hot paper clip! I doubt you did anything bad, you just chose a different route. Does it feel better after draining it?

Since the fluid that drained was clear, it's most likely serous, not infection. Look for yellow or greenish for infection.

The nail doesn't just fall off. It kind of peels off, so for a while you will probably have it hanging on halfway (you'll be able to lift part of it). If this snags it may hurt, but otherwise it won't. Toenails grow very slowly too, so it may take up to a year for a completely new and normal looking nail to come in. Your pedicures are shot for a while!

Like I said, I've never experienced this, just treated it, so V. may have some different and better advice for you. Listen to the veteran!
