I mentioned running the Indianapolis Half-Marathon next year. Today they ran it for this year. My mom just told me my brother ran it and finished it. What an idiot!

OK, so you're wondering why I said that. Because he hasn't run since high school! (He's a year younger than me.) He's about 20 lbs overweight and his exercise plan for the last few years has been to play softball, which really means drink beer. He used to be a very good athlete in his prime, but notice the past tense.

I haven't talked to him about why he ran it--probably got peer-pressured into joining someone else last minute. Either that, or he did it because he knew I wanted to. He has this real competitive streak in him when it comes to me. So what did he get for his trouble? A "blown-out knee", as my mom put it. I don't know the real injury, just that it's swollen and he can't walk on it. So now I'm torn: do I tell him congratulations, or call him the idiot he is for not respecting the distance? Silly boys. I think I'll just say congratulations and tell him not to do such a thing again. His injury is probably enough "punishment" without my verbal abuse!

I got more info--he ran the first 5 miles and his knee hurt so bad he had to walk the rest of the way and it took him 3+ hours. He says he doesn't care: he got his medal for finishing! So for all of you out there wondering if you can finish the ATM, even if you have to walk part of it, you can! I don't recommend doing it this way though.
