First race back!

Hello friends. First, I don't want the blog to go away!! Please let's hang onto this! I will be better about checking in and writing. I think I let myself fall out of the habit because I was so bummed about the injury. But, now, I'm back to 100% so, I will start checking in again.... promise!

So, my big news! My first race back after the calf tear is on Sunday!! It's five miles in Central Park. It's supposed to be good weather - a little chilly, but overall, good. And, it's a cool race - it's the week before the NYC marathon - so, our finish line is the marathon finish line (everything's set up for the marathon by that point). A friend of mine decided to run it with me. I'm actually a little worried because I really prefer to run solo. The only time I ran with someone was the midnight run on New Year's Eve and at that race, they had champagne stations instead of water stations - so I really didn't care if I was with someone or not! It should be fine, I just don't want to feel pressured to go faster than I should be going....

And, here's my question for the blog.... has anyone ever done a triathlon? Thoughts? NYC has a super cool one.... run in Central Park, bike up the west side highway into the bronx and swim in the hudson river.....

Hi Cathy! Thanks for the positive feedback on the blog. It is always nice to know that you are offering something people want.

Congrats on the race. I was so sad that you couldn't come to DC with us. I can't wait to hear how you do. You have made a fantastic comeback and done so quickly. Injuries are inevitable (especially at my age), you will have lots to contribute as we gimp our way through those struggles.

I have always wanted to do a tri. I have several friends that have done it. I have never felt strong enough on the swim to attempt, but I have it on my list of things to accomplish before I die. A great compromise would be a team tri where I could do the running leg. That said, I know that one day I will have to try a tri.

In the meantime, can I live vicariously through you?

I've never done a triathlon, but my husband is considering one and has a couple of books on how to train/prepare. I read one, and it seems the hardest part would be changing the equipment/clothes, especially if you're racing. The logistics sound overwhelming and it seems like you really need a team.

On their list of recommended items for the bike pack are tools and stuff to change a flat tire. Does this happen a lot? I don't want to change a tire mid-race!

I've also heard horror stories about people getting swum (is that a word?) over, literally. I would freak out if someone was on top of me!

It sounds like something I might like to try someday, but I'd definitely need a buddy to do it with me. Preferably one who's experienced. It would have to be a short and small one, and I definitely wouldn't race it.

There's an event next spring in my husband's hometown that he wants me to be his partner for. It's a canoe race, then a 6-mile run. It sounds like fun, but I doubt I'll be ready next year. Maybe I'll start out slow on two events before I try three!

I would love the canoe/run! That sounds perfect. When we were in DC, they had a team adventure race. It was kind of cross country running with orienteering and several "stations" that required a team task. I always thought that one would be fun. It is an all day event and the teams are made up of 3.

I would seriously be up for a team tri if we could find someone to swim. I'll look around and see what's out there for next year.

Yes, you get swum over, but that is more at the ironman level. Small local ones it is less of a chance.

Changing a tire is super easy and it happens. Some races my dad has had several flats other none at at (he has a team and usually extra bikes along to just trade out bikes when that happens).

If anyone is up for a team adventure race, there are tons out here in CO. One of my friends at the Y races adventure races with her husband and another male, she would be more than willing to hook us up :)
