It's been forever since I posted on here! No time to explain why I've been away, but I have a pressing question. If anybody has some honest advice (which means don't worry about hurting my feelings) I could use it. I'm afraid I'm about to do something stupid!
There is a marathon here on Sep 19. A marathon is certainly not something I'm trained up for. But I can't get over the overwhelming temptation to do it, not to mention the peer pressure I'm feeling from two others who also are not trained up and are novices. Are we stupid or what? Here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
It's a marathon. I've never done a marathon. I would love to be able to say I've done a marathon.
It's local and the most it would cost me is $60 if I waited to race day to sign up=dirt cheap and no travel.
Bragging rights: it's supposed to be the second hardest marathon in North America, behind the Pike's Peak one. And I may not be here next year to try it then.
It will snow the week after so that is the last running race of the season.
Cons:
It's a trail run. Which means hills, hills, and did I mention hills? Also means no spectators along the way to cheer us on.
I'm not trained up for the distance or the hills and I've never run a marathon. If it was a 10-miler, no problem. If I did it, I would plan on walking a good portion of it, which means it would take me 7-8 hours.
I only have 2 weeks to add some mileage or hills to my training.
The biggest con is, obviously, that there's a chance I'll hurt myself. That's why my husband doesn't want me to do it. So somebody talk some sense into me and tell me that peer pressure is bad before I go and do something stupid! Or if you think it's possible, give me all the advice you can to help me out!

OK, I wouldn't do it. I ran the Army 10-miler last year and wasn't trained and hurt my knee...and it set me back a long time just to get back into it after that.
The hills will kill your knees..amongst other things. If I were you....skip this one and the bragging rights because in my mind if you run a marathon you have bragging rights. Why not just pick one in the spring and train up for it so you can do your best and not worry about injuries!
What is the longest run you've done up till now?
Longest non-stop run is 8 miles. Nothing near 26.2.
I signed up for the Disney Half in January so that is my real goal. I don't want to get hurt and have to bow out of that one.
Right now I'm planning on doing the first leg of the relay, which is 9.2 miles. Just have to get over the fact that I will receive a DNF. I'm telling myself that it won't bother me since I'm planning on not finishing, but knowing me, it will eat me up.
Eh, don't let it get to you! Easier said than done, but really, you're finishing what your goal is (the 9 miles) so that's all that matters!
Enjoy the run!!!
